SHIPPING TO GUAM!
Håfa Adai Fam,
Ever wonder why it feels so much more expensive to eat healthy on Guam compared to the mainland? You're not imagining it.
Here’s the truth: location plays a HUGE role in our food access—and so does something called the Jones Act (aka the Merchant Marine Act of 1920).
Let me break it down real quick 👇
🌊 Guam’s Shipping Challenge
In the States, food is grown, processed, and shipped often within a few days. Most produce or refrigerated goods are only 1-2 days away from major stores.
But on Guam? Most items arrive by ocean freight, and that takes 2 to 3 weeks—minimum. So by the time we get our “fresh” produce, it’s already been aging on a boat, which affects not only quality but also shelf life and cost.
🇺🇸 The Jones Act = Limited Shipping Options
Under the Jones Act, any shipment from one U.S. port to another U.S. territory (like Guam) must be carried on a U.S.-built, U.S.-owned, and U.S.-crewed ship.
Why does this matter?
Because non-U.S. shipping companies (like those from Asia or Oceania) are often more affordable, efficient, and frequent—but they’re restricted. This limits competition and means Guam pays a premium just to receive goods from the mainland. I did a quick search online, and saw that US has roughly 3500 cargo vessels/freightors…. However Asia/Oceania has over 24,000.
📈 Estimates show that goods shipped via U.S. carriers can cost 30% to 50% more than if the same goods were transported by non-U.S. shipping companies.
And when you stack that onto already expensive "healthy" items like fruits, veggies, proteins, and niche dietary products... yeah, it adds up real fast. Additionally, don’t forget, when these items GET TO GUAM, they have to be maintained.. and we all know the cost of utilities is wayyyyyy higher on GU compared to that of US.
